PRESS  RELEASE  2/2010

Japanese Assistance for Mine Risk Education

L: Ms. Mona Moheeb Youssef Khouzam    R: H.E. Mr. Kaoru Ishikawa

On Monday, January 26th, 2010, H.E. Mr. Kaoru ISHIKAWA, Ambassador of Japan to the Arab Republic of Egypt, and Ms. Mona Moheeb Youssef KHOUZAM, President of Lions New Horus Club, signed a contract for the Project for Mine Risk Education.

Egypt has huge number of landmines underground. Residents in affected areas, namely North Coast and Sinai Peninsula, have faced the danger of accidents. While the Egyptian Government has made significant efforts to eradicate those landmines, Lions New Horus Club has been aware that it is also important to address the problem by civil society. The Club planned to conduct a campaign to raise public awareness of the danger of landmines and the Japanese Government has decided to extend a grant amounting to US$ 26,636 (approximately 145,000 Egyptian Pounds) for the Project.

The grant is extended under the Japanese Government’s Assistance Scheme for Grassroots and Human Security Projects. This scheme was launched in Egypt in 1994 and 124 projects have been already implemented by the end of March 2009, totaling about US$ 5.21 million. In particular, the flexibility and timely manner of this scheme has been greatly and widely appreciated.
