Satoru Mori, Professor, Hosei University


Satoru Mori is the professor of international politics and U.S. foreign policy at the Department of Global Politics, Faculty of Law, Hosei University. He is currently involved in several policy research projects organized by the Japan Institute of International Affairs, the Sasakawa Peace Foundation among others, and co-chairs a joint Japan-U.S. policy recommendation project, the Asia Strategy Initiative, formed by fifteen mid-career policy experts and academics from Japan and the United States. He has delivered remarks at workshops and events organized by the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Pacific Command, the National Intelligence Council, the Council on Foreign Relations, the Center for Strategic and International Studies, the Center for a New American Security, the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, among others. Dr. Mori is currently undertaking research on U.S. strategy in Asia with particular focus on U.S.-China relations and Japan-U.S. relations, and the U.S. defense innovation and its implications for U.S. allies. He is also preparing to initiate academic research projects on the impact of artificial intelligence on international security, and the history of domestic politics of U.S. foreign policy during periods of strategic adjustment. Dr. Mori is a former Japanese Foreign Ministry official, and holds a Ph.D. degree from the University of Tokyo, LL.M. degrees from Columbia University Law School and Kyoto University, and a LL.B. degree from Kyoto University. During his sabbatical leave, he was a visiting researcher at Princeton University (2014-2015) and George Washington University (2013-2015). His book, The Vietnam War and Alliance Diplomacy, published from the University of Tokyo Press was awarded the Hiroshi Shimizu Prize for Distinguished Academic Work from the Japanese Association of American Studies in 2010. Dr. Mori is a recipient of the 2015 Nakasone Yasuhiro Incentive Award.
