Japanese Government provides the soft loan for
the Egypt-Japan Education Partnership: Egypt-Japan School Support Program

On February 21,
2018, in the presence of H.E. Prime Minister Sherif Ismail, Mr. Takehiro Kagawa,
Ambassador of Japan to Egypt and H.E. Dr. Sahar Nasr, Minister of Investment and
International Cooperation signed and exchanged the Notes on the Japanese Yen
Loan for “the Egypt-Japan Education Partnership: Egypt-Japan School Support
Program”, which extends the soft loan up to the amount of 18,626,000,000 yen
(Approx. US$175.7 million). At the same time, Dr. Shinichi Kitaoka, President of
JICA and H.E. Dr. Tarek Shawky, Minister of Education and Technical Education
signed the Loan Agreement of this project.
The Egypt-Japan Education Partnership provides support to nurturing human
resources with rich sense of humanity who can contribute to the economic and
social development of Egypt. This partnership was announced during President El-Sisi’s
visit to Japan in February and March, 2016.
This Partnership envisages that by taking advantage of the characteristics of
Japanese education, the Japanese Government provides comprehensive support to
all the stages of the Egyptian educational system: early childhood education,
basic education, technical education and higher education. The purpose of this
loan is to promote introduction of Japanese-style education system to Egypt by
facilitating Egyptian Government’s effort to establish policy and system for
opening Egypt-Japan School (EJS) with the budget support to the education
sector. Through this, it is expected to improve quality of education and develop
capacity of Egyptian youth, thereby contributing to economic stability and
development efforts of Egypt.
