On Sunday, January 26th, 2014, Mr. Toshiro Suzuki, Ambassador of Japan to Egypt, and Dr. Samir Rizkallah, Director of the Harpur Memorial Hospital in Menouf signed a contract for Japanese Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Projects at the Embassy of Japan.

The grant assistance amounting to US$ 100,936 is extended by the Government of Japan for the purpose of purchasing a mammography machine which will contribute greatly to improving the medical services for the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer in Monofeya Governorate.

Promotion of health has long been the priority of Japan’s assistance, viewing health as one of the fundamentals of human security. The Government of Japan believes that this support will significantly help increase women’s awareness of the importance of regular breast examination which enables early discovery of cancer and increases cure possibilities, also give a lot of women in poverty a chance to receive proper medical services at low prices and a hope for better and healthier future.

The grant is extended under the Japanese Government’s Assistance Scheme for Grassroots and Human Security Projects, which gives support to Non-profitable Organizations and NGOs in fields such as health and social care, education, environment and vocational training. This scheme was launched in Egypt in 1994, and around 150 projects have been implemented to date, totaling about US$ 6.5 million. In particular, the flexibility and timely manner of the scheme has been greatly and widely appreciated.
