Japan’s Emergency Assistance for Egypt by the FY
2013 supplementary budget
- Embassy of Japan in Egypt
1. The
Government of Japan has decided to provide emergency assistance of approximately
16,000,000 US dollars for Egypt, according to its FY 2013 supplementary budget
approved by the Diet on 6 February 2014.
2. This
emergency assistance will be used for various projects implemented in Egypt by
UN agencies in order to address urgent needs and challenges facing Egypt under
the 3 following pillars. The Outline of the projects covered by this assistance
and the amount allocated to each agency are as follows:
(1)Support for Egypt in its economic and social development, democratic
transition, etc
Projects
will be implemented through the following agencies for job creation through
public works, support for elections, vocational training on the manufacturing
industry, ending violence against married women, etc.
- UNDP
(United Nations Development Programme): 8,000,000 USD
- UNIDO
(United Nations Industrial Development Organization): 1,500,000 USD
- UNWOMEN
(United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women):
999,655 USD
- UNODC
(United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime): 500,000 USD
(2) Humanitarian assistance for Syrian refugees in Egypt
Projects
for Syrian refugees will be implemented through the following agencies for
provision of daily living expenses, provision of education and health services,
distribution of food vouchers, polio vaccinations, etc.
- UNHCR
(United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees): 1,400,000 USD,
- WFP
(World Food Programme): 700,000 USD
- UNICEF
(United Nations Children’s Fund): 700,000 USD
(3) Support for stability in the Northern Africa region and the Sahel region.
Projects
will be implemented through the following agency for capacity building on
prevention of and solutions to conflicts in Northern Africa region and the Sahel
region.
- UNDP:
2,000,000 USD (Cairo PKO Center)
