Opening Ceremony of Reception Center for Street
Children in Old Cairo

On Wednesday, June 4th 2014, Mr.
Naofumi Hashimoto, Minister of the Embassy of Japan in Egypt attended the
opening ceremony of the Day Reception Center for Street Children which was held
at the New Fostat Association for Local Community Development in Old Cairo. This
ceremony was also attended by and Mrs. Hanan Mohammad, Executive Director of the
Association.
The center was established and
furnished through a grant assistance extended by the government of Japan
amounting to US$ 60,163. This project will greatly contribute to providing basic
education and medical care for a large number of street children, either orphans
or ones who were separated from their families and forced to live on the
streets.
At the ceremony, the Minister
expressed his hopes that this project helps such children, who carry the future
of Egypt on their shoulders, get their basic rights of education and health and
be able to achieve a better future for themselves.
The grant is extended under the
Japanese government’s assistance scheme for Grassroots and Human Security
Projects, which gives support to Non-profitable organizations and NGOs in fields
such as health and social care, education, environment and vocational training.
This scheme was launched in Egypt in 1994, and around 150 projects have been
implemented to date, totaling about US$ 7 million. In particular, the
flexibility and timely manner of the scheme has been greatly and widely
appreciated.
