Grassroots Assistance
Opening Ceremony of Wastewater Treatment Plant in
Fayoum Governorate supported by Japan

On Tuesday, September 9th 2014, Mr.
Takehiro Kagawa Ambassador of Japan to Egypt attended the opening ceremony of
the Wastewater Treatment Facility in Abd El Qawi Shaeitan Village, Fayoum
Governorate. Mr. Sameh Seif Ghaly, Chairman of the Board of Together Association
for Development and Environment, and Mr. Hazem Ahmed Atteya Allah, Governor of
Fayoum also attended.
At the ceremony, the Ambassador
expressed his hopes that Japan can continue to provide support to Egypt in
cooperation with Egyptian civil society organizations and local governments, and
that such assistance helps improve the living standards of the Egyptians and
further strengthens the bilateral relations.
The facility was financed by grant
assistance extended by the Government of Japan amounting to US$105,787. The
project provides a sewage network for the surrounding area and establishes a
treatment plant for household wastewater.
Together association has a long
experience in the field of wastewater treatment both domestically and
internationally. The process that the association adopts in its treatment plants
is distinguished by being environment-friendly, since it depends entirely on
natural methods for sanitation treatment, without using chemicals. The
post-treatment outcome is harmless to the environment and can be utilized as a
sustainable source of irrigation water.
The grant is extended under the
Japanese government’s assistance scheme for Grassroots and Human Security
Projects, which gives support to Non-profitable organizations and NGOs in fields
such as health, social care, education, environment and vocational training.
This scheme was launched in Egypt in 1994, and around 150 projects have been
implemented to date, totaling about US$ 7 million.
