Japan’s engagement with MENA countries

?@  Supporting transition and reforms in the MENA region to enhance fair political process and government

   →Support for coming elections in Tunisia and Egypt (dispatch of missions and experts), including the dispatch of an election-monitoring  mission to the Constituent Assembly’s election in Tunisia (October 23).

 

?A   Supporting human resource development as a basis for economic recovery and stabilization

    →Development of vocational training and other educational facilities, dispatch of experts and acceptance of trainees, support for higher education in science and technology, etc…

 

?B   Supporting job creation and fostering industries to address severe unemployment problems

   →Support for building infrastructure by means of yen-loan:  Additional new loans of approx. $ 1 billion in total to be extended in the near future.   

    →Sharing Japanese experience and know-how conducive to the promotion of industry diversification and higher productivity in MENA countries.

?C  Strengthening economic/business ties between Japan and Arab countries at all levels

   →Promotion of projects cutting across such sectors as energy and environment, through Japan-Arab Economic Forum (3rd meeting in 2013) , bilateral business committees, etc.   Support for business-to-business interaction.

 

?D  Forging people-to-people relationships and dialogues between Japan and Arab countries

    →Promotion of dialogues, including the “Dialogue for the Future between Japan and the Islamic World” (next session to be held in Jordan within this fiscal year).

  

In Addition, Japan supports Libya through such initial steps as:

      → Humanitarian aid: on top of hitherto provided approx. $ 6.2 million, another $ 2 million contribution through ICRC.

            → Initial release of Libyan frozen assets of up to $ 1.5 billion.
