Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan

Statement by Minister for Foreign Affairs on the deteriorating situation in the Gaza Strip

1. The Government of Japan is deeply concerned that the situation has become increasingly tense in and around the Gaza Strip.

2. Japan calls on the Palestinian armed groups to stop the rocket attacks and on Israel to exercise maximum self-restraint to avoid the escalation of violence and further bloodshed, especially an increase in civilian casualties. In addition, Japan continues to urge both parties to promptly reach a lasting agreement on the cease-fire.

3. Japan also supports and promotes the mediation efforts by the international community, including relevant countries, the Arab League and the United Nations, and will provide the utmost cooperation toward these efforts.
