Japan Supports
Excavation, Preservation and Restoration of
Second Solar Boat


1. Today (November 21st,
2012), a ceremony for handing-over of
Photovoltaic Power Generation Unit to the excavation site of the Second Solar
Boat was held at the site, which was attended by Ambassador of Japan to Egypt
Mr. Norihiro OKUDA, Prof Sakuji Yoshimura, the president of the Institute of the
Solar Boat and Mr. Mohsen Said Ali, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of
Antiquities(SCA).
2. Japan’s contribution of
Photovoltaic Power Generation Unit to the excavation site of the Second Solar
Boat is summarized bellow:
1) Recipient: Institute of
the Solar Boat (Japanese non-profit organization)

Amount of the grant from the
Government of Japan: US$110,803
3) The Japanese-made
Photovoltaic Power Generation Unit has been procured and installed at the
excavation site of the Second Solar Boat to operate electrical equipment for
activities of its excavation, preservation and restoration.
3. It is expected that the
restoration of the Second Solar Boat which was found beside King Khufu Pyramid
be attractive to tourists, and thus contribute to the revival of tourism in
Egypt. In addition to this assistance, the Government of Japan has supported the
Egyptology through the supply of the large tent which is essential to the
restoration of the Second Solar Boat and the construction of the Grand Egyptian
Museum (GEM) near Giza Pyramids to which a soft loan of about US$400 million has
been provided, among others.
4. The Photovoltaic Power
Generation Unit will be used in other excavation sites in Egypt after completion
of the project of Second Solar Boat Project.
