The Fifth Trilateral Foreign Ministers’ Meeting of Japan, the People’s Republic of China, and the Republic of Korea convened in Kyoto, Japan on March 19, 2011. Foreign Minister of Japan Takeaki Matsumoto, who chaired the meeting, expressed his deep gratitude for the dispatch of emergency relief teams and the provision of support goods from both China and the Republic of Korea, and stated that:

a) the recent earthquake and tsunami were beyond all imagination even for Japan and have resulted in an extremely large amount of damage, but

b) Japan is determined to overcome this crisis in a nationwide concerted effort, with the cooperation of the international community.

The foreign ministers of the three countries also emphasized the importance of cooperation on disaster management and nuclear safety, and shared the view to strengthen cooperation in these areas and to cooperate toward concrete results in these areas at the Trilateral Summit Meeting of Japan, the People’s Republic of China, and the Republic of Korea, which is to be held in Japan this May.
