The second seminar: Dialogue among civilizations
between Japan and the Islamic World
"Peace and Human Development"
September 11th and the subsequent war in Iraq underscored the
importance of interactions among civilizations to achieve peaceful
co-existence of people with different social and cultural
backgrounds. In order to deepen understanding of other
civilizations and nurture tolerance to others, Ministry of Foreign
Affairs of Japan and Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bahrain
organized last year the first seminar in Bahrain where the
Japanese scholars and those in the Islamic world exchanged views
as free individuals on Japan and the Islamic world. And the second
seminar, which was held on 8th and 9th October 2003 in Tokyo, with
"peace and human development" as the main theme, examined factors
of conflict and instability from an aspect of human development,
and discussed how best the human society could address the era of
crisis.
