Japan-Egypt Year of Science and Technology 2008

Japan-Egypt relations have enjoyed steady development in the recent years in various fields. The Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s visit to Egypt last May highlighted this trend. The Joint Statement clearly stated that Prime Minister Abe and President Mohammad Hosny Mubarak reiterated their common determination to further strengthen these cordial bonds through enhanced dialogue and cooperation at all levels.

To rejuvenate activities in science and technology in Egypt, President Mubarak also announced the period 2007-2016 as a Decade for Science and Technology, to clearly extend the commitment of the Egyptian Government to science and technology, and to enhance scientific cooperation with scientifically advanced countries, and to strengthen Egypt’s scientific and technological base.  The year 2007, the first year of the decade, was Egyptian-German Year of Science and Technology.

Considering the deepening cordial relations between Japan and Egypt, and considering the importance of the Decade for Science and Technology in Egypt, both governments have decided to make this year “Japan-Egypt Year of Science and Technology 2008.”

Japan-Egypt Year of Science and Technology will be a platform for increased scientific cooperation between Japan and Egypt.  It will serve to strengthen the scientific ties between Egypt and Japan, to improve scientific cooperation, and to encourage joint Japanese-Egyptian research activities. It should be also noted that growing knowledge of, and spreading interests in science and technology among all the generations of the nation would form a firm foundation for the national development. The Year will encompass not only academics, but also industry and business circle, ordinary citizens, youth and children, as these actors are to be important in promoting science and technology.  Thus, the Year of Science and Technology is expected to bring the peoples of Japan and Egypt much closer.
