2025/9/24

On September 24, in Cairo, Arab Republic of Egypt, H.E. Mr. IWAI Fumio, Ambassador Designate of Japan to the Arab Republic of Egypt, and H.E. Dr. Rania A. Al-Mashat, Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation of the Arab Republic of Egypt, signed and exchanged notes concerning a yen loan for the “Greater Cairo Metro Line No. 4 Phase I Project (IV),” which aims to construct a metro line in the southwestern part of the Greater Cairo Metropolitan Area.

 Overview of the Project

In Egypt, chronic traffic congestion has become a serious issue due to population growth and the increased use of automobiles. With ongoing urbanization, further deterioration of traffic conditions is expected. The Egyptian government has been promoting the development of satellite cities equipped with industrial and residential functions in the suburbs of the Greater Cairo Metropolitan Area to disperse the population. However, the impact of traffic congestion has extended to inter-city transportation, and the development of a public transportation network has become an urgent issue.

This project aims to construct a metro line in the southwestern part of the Greater Cairo Metropolitan Area to meet increasing transportation demand and alleviate worsening traffic congestion, thereby contributing to the economic development of the Arab Republic of Egypt.
