Japan's Assistance to Egypt -Economic Cooperation (Official Development Assistance, ODA)

1. Outline
Egypt is currently undergoing active and serious economic and social development with foreign support and assistance.JAPAN is providing Official Development Assistance (ODA) to a wide range of developing countries in various forms. The economic assistance to Egypt is considerable in terms of its volume and content. Egypt is the ninth largest recipient of Japanese bilateral aid (based on accumulating total from FY 1969 until FY 2001) and the largest in the Middle East.
JAPAN accords priority to the following areas for assistance to Egypt. Such priority was apportioned on the basis of policy dialogue between Japan and Egypt, as well as studies and research on development conditions, objectives and plans designed by Egypt:
- Expansion of agricultural production
- Development of human resources
- Boosting economic infrastructure
- Upgrading health and medical care services, population control and family planning
- Improvement of living environment ( water and sewage systems ) and public hygiene

JICA [ http://www.jica.go.jp ] [ http://www.jica.go.jp/egypt/index.html ]Since its establishment, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has supported socio-economic and human-resource development in order to facilitate the autonomous, sustainable development of developing countries, as one of Japan's Official Development Assistance (ODA) implementing bodies. JICA is mainly responsible for implementing technical cooperation for developing countries.
JICA invites government officials, engineers, and skilled workers from developing countries to Japan for training in a variety of fields. To developing countries, JICA dispatches experts with the skills and knowledge suited to the countries’ needs. It provides the equipment needed to transfer technology appropriately and effectively. It also sends various study groups to draw up development plans for developing countries and regions.

The Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) was established in 1958 as a special public institution to enhance Japanese exports to the world. Later, as Japan's trade surplus grew to unprecedented levels, JETRO concentrated on helping foreign companies enter the Japanese market with its 76 overseas branches.
JETRO also continues to carry out economic research overseas and collect extensive information for dissemination to business circles.
