Inauguration of Sheikh Saleh Primary School in Sayeda Zainab
On Wednesday, August 10, 2022, His Excellency Ambassador Oka Hiroshi, Ambassador of Japan to the Arab Republic of Egypt, and Ms. Firdous Ahmed, Chairperson of the Tanweer Center for Development and Human Rights, witnessed the inauguration of Sheikh Saleh Primary School in Sayeda Zainab. This project was executed by Tanweer Center for Development and Human Rights, using Japan’s grassroot grants of about US$227,000. It benefits about 1,000 students and their teachers, who will be able to enjoy high quality educational environment and emotional education in music and art, through the renovation of school infrastructure.
This is the second collaboration between the Embassy of Japan and Tanweer Center for Development and Human Rights, since the school renovation project in the same district in 2019.
At the ceremony, Ms. Firdous Ahmed along with other speakers expressed their sincere appreciation to Japan’s commitment to support the educational reforms in Egypt and showed their gratitude to Japan’s assistance to this project in particular. Ambassador Oka commended the valuable role played by Egyptian civil society organization such as Tanweer Center. Stressing that this project is one of the examples of the “Egypt-Japan Education Partnership” announced in 2016 during the visit by H.E. President El Sisi to Japan, he vowed to continue cooperation in the education sector based on the principle of human security, leaving no one behind.
This project comes within the framework of the Japanese aid grant program “Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects,” which provides direct financial support to non-profitable organizations including NGOs in various fields such as education, health, inclusion of persons with disabilities, vocational training, and empowerment of women, environment and others. Japan has extended about US$10 million in Egypt since 1994, supporting 174 projects.
