The former project contributes to enhancing job skills of almost 100 young women in Old Cairo by facilitating the handicrafts and culinary trainings as well as establishing kitchen lab. During his visit, Ambassador Oka witnessed the results of the project, including the successful completion of the culinary and handicrafts training of many Egyptian women.
The latter project contributes by renovating the facility for hearing impaired children, Deaf Unit, to providing safer activities for the 60 impaired children and 23 staff members who currently use the facility. During the ceremony, Archbishop Dr. Samy Shehata, Chairman of Nardin Association and other speakers expressed their sincere appreciation to Japan’s assistance to support hearing impaired children in El-Malek El-Saleh. Ambassador Oka emphasized the importance of human security, which is the basic principle of the SDGs that "no one is left behind" to protect and empower vulnerable people by focusing on each individual. He expressed his willingness to continue to actively provide support to Egypt, which is experiencing remarkable economic growth, to reduce the number of people left behind by the growth as much as possible and spread smiles throughout Egypt.
These projects come within the framework of Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (KUSANONE), which provides direct and small-scale financial support to non-profit organizations including non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the local communities. Japan has extended approximately US$10 million in Egypt since 1994, supporting 176 projects throughout Egypt in a wide range of sectors including education, health, water and sanitation, vocational training, women empowerment and special need support.
