Successful Examples of GAGP Projects
The following projects can be described as “significant GAGP
Projects”:
Field No.1 ~ Women in Development (WID)

Name of Project: The Project for the Construction of a Women’s
Educational Center
-
Situation:
An Association had been working on a capacity building for the
CDA (Community Development Association) in a small village in
order to have them run various programs for women including
literacy classes and vocational training courses. The CDA got
everything prepared and the tutors were all ready to teach.
However, the building was too small and old, so the
Association and the CDA decided to build a new one on land
that CDA owned.

Implementation:
The Association paid to have the old building demolished and a
new two-story building with 7 classrooms was built with GAGP
funding.

Grant Items: The total cost of construction

Grant Amount (approximately): US$20,000 - 30,000
-
Outcome:
Five times more women than before can attend classes in a
pleasant and safer environment. In addition, a library room
has been added where women can read books free of charge.

Beneficiary: 600 women per year
Field No. 2 ~ Primary Education

Name of Project: The Project for Renovation for Primary School
in Giza
-
Situation:
An Association was running a primary school which had provided
a decent, inexpensive primary education for over twenty years.
The school building was damaged by the earthquake in 1992 and
the government ordered the building closed because of the
damage. The Association raised money and renovated the
building to the minimum standard that sufficed for it to
reopen. However, more renovation was required to provide a
safe and appropriate educational environment.

Improvement:
The total cost of renovation and new equipment was financed by
GAGP. The renovation was completed and new desks and chairs
were provided.

Grant Items: Renovation of the school building, desks and
chairs.

Grant Amount (approximately): US$35,000 - 45,000

Outcome:
The school is able to provide a safe, clean, functioning
educational environment for students, whose learning level has
improved.

Beneficiary: 200 per year
Field No. 3 ~ Vocational Training

Name of Project: The Project for Provision of Vocational
Training Equipment

Situation:
An Association has been implementing various development
programs in Upper Egypt for 60 years. They start building a
comprehensive training center in an Upper Egyptian village but
the budget ran out before completion. Furnishing and equipping
the center still had to be done.
-
Implementation:
The Association raised the funds to complete the furnishing,
and GAGP provides funds to equip the Vocational Training
Center.

Grant Items: Vocational training equipment for electrical,
welding, wood and plumbing workshops
-
Grant Amount (approximately): US$40,000 - 50,000
-
Outcome: The four workshops started operation immediately
after the equipment had been provided.

Beneficiary: 240 per year
Field No. 4 ~ Primary Health

Name of Project: The Project for Provision of Ophthalmologic
Equipment
-
Situation:
An Association provides medical caravans offering
ophthalmologic medical services at low costs in rural areas.
However, they had difficulty in examining and treating
patients properly because of lack of proper equipment.

Implementation: GAGP paid for the equipment.
-
Grant Items: Ophthalmologic equipment
-
Grant Amount (approximately): US$50,000 - 60,000
-
Outcome: More patients can have their eyes examined and the
treatment is better.
-
Beneficiary: 5,000 unprivileged patients per year
Field No. 5 ~ Welfare

Name of Project: The Project for Improvement of Facilities for
Mentally Challenged Youth
-
Situation:
An Association owned a center for mentally challenged youth in
their own building where they provided services to help the
youth in being independent. It was difficult for the
Association to renovate its 80-year-old building because of
lack of money.

Implementation: The Association completed the renovation with
the help of the Grant Funds.
-
Grant Items: Renovation and Vocational Training Equipment
-
Grant Amount (approximately): US$25,000 - 35,000
-
Outcome:
The youth can learn effectively in a safe and pleasant
environment. More programs can be run by using the newly
acquired training equipment.
-
Beneficiary: 50 mentally challenged youth per year
Field No. 6 ~ Human Rights

Name of Project: The Project for Provision of Equipment for
Refugees’ Shelter
-
Situation:
The activity of an Association is assisting refugees and they
have implemented social and economical support programs. They
started a new project to help refugees, building a shelter,
where they can live safely and legally. However, they ran out
of money and could not furnish the facility.
-
Implementation: GAGP provided money and the shelter was
furnished.
-
Grant Items: Electric appliances and furniture
-
Grant Amount (approximately): US$30,000 - 40,000
-
Outcome:
The refugees supported by the Association immediately moved
into the shelter with its safe and decent accomodation and the
Association is able to carry out support and programs.

Beneficiary: 80 refugees per year
Field No. 7 ~ Environment

Name of Project: The Project for Improvement of Recycling
Center
-
Situation:
An Association was working on waste recovery, collecting
garbage and recycling it. They decided to expand their
activities by building a Recycling Center on their own land
where larger number of better-quality products can be produced
efficiently and more cheaply.
-
Implementation:
GAGP provided the budget. The Recycling Center was constructed
and new equipment for recycling was provided.
-
Grant Items: Construction of Recycling Center, Grinder,
Bending Machine

Grant Amount (approximately): US$70,000 - 80,000
-
Outcome:
The recycling of plastic articles was improved by making
larger number of better-quality products. The recycling was
modernized and made more efficient.
-
Beneficiary: 3,500 people directly in the first year
But some projects have run into trouble…
-
Remained funds were used without any notice and approval.
After the payment of all the items agreed in the Grant
Contract, some GAGP funds remained in one organization’s
account. This organization spent the money on items not agreed
on with GAGP staff. It now has to save money every month in
order to repay GAGP.
-
A minibus provided as a Grant item was misused.
One organization acquired a minibus as a Grant item transport
mentally challenged children to a school that they own.
However, it was later proved that the minibus was being used
for commercial purpose in addition to transporting the
children.
-
Grant items were supplied by a supplier personally related
to one of the organization’s members.
One organization made a phony procurement contract to supply
school equipment with a relative of one of the organization’s
members.
