On February 20th, 2020, H.E. Mr. NOKE Masaki, Ambassador of Japan to Egypt and Ms. Safaa Fahmy Abd El-Haleem, Chairperson of Center of Egyptian Family Development Foundation, signed a Grant Contract for Japanese Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects.

The grant assistance amounting to US$ 89,820 is extended by the Government of Japan to Center of Egyptian Family Development Foundation for the purpose of improving the living standards of small-scale farmers in Luxor Governorate by establishing a Solar Dryer Unit for producing dried tomatoes in order to increase the agricultural value-added of tomatoes and reduce losses, as well as providing capacity building trainings for increasing land productivity and improving farmers’ marketing skills.
This project will support around 300 small-scale farmers, including 90 women, living in Esna district- Luxor Governorate, to secure stable income. Establishing a Solar Dryer Unit for tomatoes shall develop the processing industry and improve the value of tomato cultivation as a whole, particularly for small-scale farmers. In addition to that, the project will improve the technical and marketing capabilities of small-scale farmers of how to deal with the tomato crops for the production of dried tomatoes. Subsequently, creating tomato processing capabilities will help in mitigating the loss of overproduction and in providing steady, all-season supply.
On the occasion of the signing ceremony, Ambassador Noke emphasized the significance of this project for enhancing living conditions of small-scale farmers including women empowerment, and improving tomato production in Esna district where there have been tomato production losses since 2017 onward, due to pests and climate change. Finally, he extended his appreciation to the cooperation with Center of Egyptian Family Development Foundation and the partnership with Sawiris Foundation for Development. On the other hand, Dr. Sohair, Project Manager of Center of Egyptian Family Development Foundation, pointed out the importance of this project for supporting agriculture and small-scale farmers in Esna and expressed her gratitude for the support of the Government of Japan, as well as the support of Sawiris Foundation for Social Development.
The project will be executed in collaboration with a prominent, national development partner “Sawiris Foundation for Social Development”, as the Foundation will provide further necessary capacity building trainings for two years. Sawiris Foundation for Social Development was founded in 2001 as a grant-making foundation, and in 2005, the Foundation was granted special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
This grant is extended under the Japanese Government’s assistance scheme of the “Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects” which provides direct financial support to non-profitable organizations including NGOs in fields such as health, social welfare, education, environment, vocational training, and empowerment of women. Under this scheme, Japan has supported 169 projects in Egypt since 1994 thus far, totaling about US$ 9 million.
