Inauguration of Primary School in Sayeda Zeinab with Improved Educational Environment under Japan’s Grant Assistance Program

     On October 28th of 2020, H.E. NOKE Masaki, Ambassador of Japan to Egypt, attended a ceremony to celebrate the inauguration of “The Project for Improvement of Primary School in Sayeda Zeinab, Cairo Governorate”. The project was supported by Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects. The ceremony was also attended by Ms. Fardos Ahmed, the Chairperson of Tanweer Center, as well as Mr. Yasser Anis, the General Director of Educational Department of Sayeda Zeinab District, Eng. Jehan Abdel Moneim, Deputy Governor of Cairo for the Southern Region and Dr. Samir El-Fekki, Deputy Minister of Social Solidarity..
 
     The grant assistance amounting to 172,228 USD was extended by the Government of Japan to Tanweer Center for the purpose of implementing this project in order to provide safe and decent educational environment at Shohadaa Port Said Primary School through refurbishing school buildings and facilities and offering capacity building training programs to school teachers.
 
     It is noteworthy that Sayeda Zeinab district in Cairo has only two primary schools including Shohadaa Port Said Primary School. The implementation of this project brought significant differences in educational environment for students and teachers, where school buildings and classrooms were renovated and equipped with effective educational tools to facilitate quality education; currently, children are studying under safe and enhanced environment.
 
     At the ceremony, Ms. Fardos Ahmed along with other speakers expressed their sincere appreciation to Japan’s commitment to support the educational reforms in Egypt and showed their gratitude to Japan’s assistance to this project in particular. Ambassador NOKE reminded his visit to this school in March 2019 when he realized the urgent necessity to improve the deteriorated building and educational material, and expressed his happiness to witness the refurbished school providing remarkably safer and better educational environment. He emphasized that education is a priority area for the cooperation between Japan and Egypt and reiterated his determination to continue supporting the sector of education. He also highlighted the pivotal role of the civil society in educational development in Egypt.
 
     This grant was extended under the Japanese Government’s assistance program of the “Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects” which provides direct financial support to non-profitable organizations including NGOs in fields such as health, social welfare, education, environment, vocational training, and empowerment of women. Under this scheme, Japan has supported 171 projects in Egypt since 1994 up until now, totaling more than US$ 9 million.
