On Thursday, November 21, 2024, His Excellency Mr. IWAI Fumio, Ambassador-designate of Japan to Egypt, and Dr. Amal Emam, Acting CEO of the Egyptian Red Crescent Society (ERC), signed a grant contract under the framework of Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (“KUSANONE” project).
The grant, amounting to approximately USD 126,000, has been extended by the Embassy of Japan to support the enhancement of warehouses infrastructure across 12 governorates in Egypt. This funding will facilitate the procurement of four specialized trucks, ensuring the efficient and reliable distribution of medical supplies to ERC-operated medical centers, thereby bolstering healthcare services in the region.

During the signing ceremony, Ambassador Iwai expressed his pleasure at the cooperation with ERC and commended the ERC’s critical role in providing humanitarian assistance in response to crisis. He explained that the project will not only contribute to improving the healthcare environment, but will also support the ERC, which is under tremendous strain in its support to Gaza Crisis.

Dr. Amal Emam conveyed her profound appreciation for Japan’s “KUSANONE” project and reaffirmed ERC commitment to the successful implementation of the initiative. She emphasized that the collaboration represents a transformative opportunity to strengthen the ERC's logistical operations, enabling it to address critical needs of the targeted communities. Dr. Emam also underscored the dual impact of the project in enhancing ERC’s ongoing efforts in responding to escalating humanitarian challenges.

The “KUSANONE” project is a cornerstone of Japan’s development cooperation efforts, providing targeted financial support to non-profit organizations, including NGOs, to address local community needs. Since its inception in 1994, Japan has contributed over USD 10 million to fund 180 projects in Egypt, in collaboration with 129 NGOs. These projects span key sectors such as education, healthcare, water and sanitation, vocational training, women’s empowerment, and support for individuals with special needs.

The Embassy of Japan encourages NGOs to submit applications for new projects under the “KUSANONE” framework. For more information, please visit the Embassy’s website at: https://www.eg.emb-japan.go.jp/itprtop_en/11_000001_00770.html
