On Tuesday, March 10, 2026, His Excellency Mr. IWAI Fumio, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Arab Republic of Egypt, and representatives of the Magdi Yacoub Heart Foundation signed a grant contract today under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (“KUSANONE” project).

The Government of Japan will support this project by granting 51,745 US dollars to Magdi Yacoub Heart Foundation to equip the intensive care unit (ICU) with essential medical equipment. The aim of this project is to strengthen the system for offering advanced medical services to cardiac patients, particularly those facing economic hardships in Upper Egypt.

The Aswan Heart Centre, operated by Magdi Yacoub Heart Foundation, has been providing state-of-the-art cardiac surgery free of charge. To date, it has treated over 40,000 patients and performs approximately 1,500 surgical operations annually. We value the important role the Aswan Heart Centre is playing in the provision of medical services in the region. However, the center is constantly operating at full capacity, so a lot of patients are currently awaiting surgery.

Through this project, we plan to provide Magdi Yacoub Heart Foundation with a cardiovascular ultrasound diagnostic system, five ICU in-patient beds, and two ventilator circuit support arms. These additions will help to reduce the number of patients waiting for heart surgery and contribute to enhancing the quality of medical services in Upper Egypt.

The “KUSANONE” project is an important part of Japan’s development cooperation efforts, providing targeted financial support directly to NGOs and non-profit organizations to address local community needs. Since its inception in 1994, Japan has contributed over USD 11 million through this scheme. This project marks the 182nd supported by the Embassy of Japan and the 39th located in Upper Egypt.

The Embassy of Japan encourages NGOs to apply for new projects under the “KUSANONE” program. For more information, please visit the Embassy’s website at:
