On Monday, June 22, 2026, H.E. Mr. IWAI Fumio, Ambassador of Japan to Egypt, and H.E. Dr. Amal Emam, CEO of the Egyptian Red Crescent Society (ERC), witnessed the successful completion of the Japanese “KUSANONE” project (Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects). Through this project, Japan has provided four jumbo trucks for the ERC worth US$126,000 to support its timely delivery of humanitarian assistance to those who are in dire need.

This project will contribute to enhancing the ERC’s transport capacity and ensuring that humanitarian assistance reaches those in need in a timely manner.

During the completion ceremony, Ambassador Iwai expressed his pleasure at the successful completion of the project and his appreciation for the ERC’s efforts. “I vividly remember attending the signing ceremony for this project shortly after I was assigned to Egypt, and I am proud that it has now been successfully completed. The relationship between Japan and the ERC is strong, with both sides having collaborated on KUSANONE projects six times to date. Furthermore, the Embassy and JICA have provided various forms of humanitarian support to Gaza. We hope that this relationship will continue and further expand in the future,” Ambassador Iwai said.

Dr. Amal Emam said, “I am very grateful to the Embassy of Japan for their continued support. Cooperation between Japan and the ERC began in 1998, and we deeply appreciate Japan’s long-standing commitment to both the ERC and the IFRC. The Embassy of Japan has continued to contribute to enhancing the capacity of blood banks and improving the quality of life for the vulnerable Egyptian people. The trucks provided through this project will be used to transport humanitarian aid supplies and are extremely valuable."

The “KUSANONE” program is an important part of Japan’s development cooperation efforts, providing targeted financial support directly to NGOs and non-profit organizations to address local community needs. Since its inception in 1994, Japan has contributed more than USD 11 million to fund 184 projects in Egypt. These projects span key sectors such as education, healthcare, water and sanitation, vocational training, women’s empowerment, and support for individuals with special needs.

The Embassy of Japan encourages NGOs to apply for new projects under the “KUSANONE” program. For more information, please visit the Embassy’s website at:
