Japan Celebrates the Successful Completion of a “KUSANONE” Project at Shefaa Al Orman Hospital in Luxor

On Wednesday, July 29, 2026, H.E. Mr. IWAI Fumio, Ambassador of Japan to Egypt, witnessed the successful completion of the Japanese “KUSANONE” project (Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects). Through this project, Japan provided a grant of US$40,000 for the procurement of an MRI-compatible anesthesia machine, with the aim of facilitating safer, more efficient, and more accurate MRI examinations for patients in Upper Egypt. The machine has been installed and is now fully operational at this hospital.
Shefaa Al Orman Hospitals comprise an adult cancer hospital and a dedicated children’s cancer hospital. Together, they provide comprehensive, state-of-the-art medical services free of charge to an average of approximately 500 patients per day from across Upper Egypt, particularly Luxor and Qena.
During his visit, Ambassador Iwai was deeply impressed by the hospital’s high level of medical professionalism, its use of the latest medical equipment and technologies, and the compassionate care tailored to the needs of each cancer patient. “What particularly impressed me was that the entire hospital had been decorated with bright colors to alleviate the children’s anxiety and fear as much as possible, while medical staff also provided them with honest and age-appropriate explanations of their illnesses,” Ambassador Iwai said.
Dr. Khaled El-Noury, Chairman of the Board of Shefaa Al Orman Hospital, expressed his gratitude to Japan for providing the advanced MRI-compatible anesthesia machine. He praised the longstanding historical relations and strong ties between Egypt and Japan, stating that the assistance would further strengthen the hospital’s ability to provide free medical services to many patients throughout Upper Egypt.
The “KUSANONE” program is an important part of Japan’s development cooperation efforts, providing targeted financial support directly to NGOs and non-profit organizations to address local community needs. Since its inception in 1994, Japan has contributed more than USD 11 million to fund 184 projects in Egypt. These projects span key sectors such as education, healthcare, water and sanitation, vocational training, women’s empowerment, and support for individuals with special needs.
